Origins & Local Terroir

“A nature rich in resources has inspired and motivated us to renovate and rebuild this site."

Grand Montagne Farm, built by the Perillat family, housed a herd of Abondance cows and all the equipment needed for making farmhouse Reblochon cheese during the summer. In 1970, there was no snow until January 26th. Subsequently, there was daily snowfall in February, March, and April, which caused a collapse on the northeast side.

The Grand Montagne Farm was then renovated and inhabited by Christian Perillat.

he southern part, built in 1916, was occupied by the parents of Denis Perrillat, born in Grand Montagne in 1956. Denis and Laurence then occupied the farm until 1998.

They chose to settle 300 meters away with their son Florian and his wife Marie-Lyse. Florian and Marie-Lyse take care of a herd of

Abondance dairy cows to make farmhouse Reblochon cheese with milk collected in the morning and evening.

The family, owners since October 8, 2010, of the southern side of La Grand Montagne, has also been farming organic meadows for many years. The hay from these meadows is partly delivered to a farm in Le Grand Bornand.

“With Christian Perillat, our neighbor, we decided to bring this alpine farm back to life and restore it to its original state by recovering the wood, the donkey head, and the stones from the old construction.”

The work began in 2021 and will be completed by the end of 2022. At an altitude of 1,600 meters, winter lasts from October to late May, with 1.5 meters of snow blocking access.
